Introduction to Subscriptions

Automate recurring billing with Paisr Subscriptions.

Paisr Subscriptions automate recurring invoicing for services, memberships, digital products, and any other business model built around a billing cycle. Subscriptions are tied to customers and driven by Product Plans that define the pricing and billing interval.

Once a subscription is active, Paisr handles the full recurring lifecycle on your behalf:

  • Generates a new invoice at each billing interval
  • Emails the invoice to the customer
  • Tracks payment status in real time
  • Notifies the customer if a charge fails
  • Automatically voids unpaid invoices when a subscription is cancelled or expires

Prerequisites

At least one Product Plan with an active price option must exist before you can create a subscription.

Creating a Subscription

Navigate to Billing → Subscriptions and click Create Subscription, or use the Subscriptions API.

  1. Select the customer to bill.
  2. Select up to 10 price options from your plans. If adding more than one option, all options must share the same billing interval.
  3. Set auto_renew to control whether Paisr automatically charges the customer's saved payment method at each renewal.
  4. Click Create to generate the subscription and its first invoice.
curl -X POST "https://api.live.paisr.tech/v2/subscriptions" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer <token>" \
  -H "User-Agent: MyApp/1.0" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
  "customer": "cus_<id>",
  "auto_renew": true,
  "line_items": [
    { "option_id": "plo_<id>", "quantity": 1 }
  ]
}'

The response includes the subscription ID and a session.url — the hosted checkout link for the initial invoice.

Activating a Subscription

A newly created subscription starts in pending status. To activate it, the first invoice must be paid. Share the checkout URL with the customer, or send it by email from the dashboard.

Once the initial payment is collected, the subscription moves to active and future invoices are generated automatically at each billing interval.

Auto-Renewal

When auto_renew is enabled, Paisr charges the customer's saved payment method at each renewal date without any manual action. If the charge fails, the subscription is automatically moved to suspended until the outstanding invoice is resolved.

When auto_renew is disabled, Paisr generates and emails the invoice at each interval but does not attempt an automatic charge. The customer must pay manually.

Toggle auto-renewal at any time:

curl -X PATCH "https://api.live.paisr.tech/v2/subscriptions/{subscription_id}" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer <token>" \
  -H "User-Agent: MyApp/1.0"

Modifying Subscriptions

Subscriptions cannot be edited directly after creation. To change pricing or billing logic, update the connected Price Options. Keep in mind:

  • Changes to price options apply to future invoices only — current billing period invoices are not affected.
  • Billing interval changes are not inherited by existing active subscriptions — only new subscriptions created from the updated option will use the new interval.

Cancelling a Subscription

Cancel an active or suspended subscription from the dashboard or via the API. The subscription remains accessible until the end of the current billing period, after which no further invoices are generated. All pending unpaid invoices are voided immediately on cancellation.

curl -X POST "https://api.live.paisr.tech/v2/subscriptions/{subscription_id}/cancel" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer <token>" \
  -H "User-Agent: MyApp/1.0"

Restoring a Suspended Subscription

A suspended subscription can be restored by paying the outstanding invoice. You can also trigger a new payment attempt programmatically:

curl -X POST "https://api.live.paisr.tech/v2/subscriptions/{subscription_id}/restore" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer <token>" \
  -H "User-Agent: MyApp/1.0"

Deleting a Subscription

Only subscriptions in pending or expired status can be deleted. Active, suspended, or cancelled subscriptions cannot be deleted.

curl -X DELETE "https://api.live.paisr.tech/v2/subscriptions/{subscription_id}" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer <token>" \
  -H "User-Agent: MyApp/1.0"
